Students stepped into Barbara Jordan’s spacious common areas and labs for the first time on Monday, January 7th, 2019. The $36.6 million, 120,000-square-foot building, which accommodates 600 to 800 students, features a mix of spaces for a variety of programs. One side of the school houses large labs for construction, welding, and additional programs, while the other side features programs such as cosmetology and early childhood development.

 

TCM has been honored to provide project management services for this and several other facilities as part of Houston Independent School District’s $2 billion bond program. Throughout the entirety of the planning and construction process, TCM has worked with HISD staff and directors to coordinate a flawless turnover of the property and an engaging and inspiring learning experience for its students.

 

“The transition to the Barbara Jordan Career Center will open up opportunities for many more students,” Principal Ross McAlpine said. “This specialized center will allow them to receive training using state-of-the-art equipment and technology that will prepare them to excel in their career.”

 

The center of the school features a large common area with a learning staircase, which will provide a place for students to gather for studying, lectures, or career exploration programs. The second level has a human sciences wing that will host programs such as allied health and medical biotech, as well as math and video production labs.

 

Once construction on the main high school was completed, TCM also supervised the demolition of the previous structure and the establishment of new and renovated parking structures.

 

Barbara Jordan High School is among 40 schools being renovated or rebuilt as part of the 2012 Bond Program. Once all projects are done, HISD – one of the nation’s largest school districts – will have one of the most modern portfolios of urban high schools in the country.
